Myotherapy is a hands-on therapy focused on assessing, treating and helping rehabilitate muscle and joint pain. Unlike a straightforward massage, it starts with a proper assessment of what's actually going on in your body, then builds a treatment plan around it.
A relaxation or remedial massage is about easing pain, tension and supporting general wellbeing. It's firm, therapeutic and relaxing, but it isn't built around a specific assessment or ongoing plan.
Myotherapy starts differently. It begins with an edidence-based assessment, then draws on a broader clinical toolkit, massage, myofascial release, joint mobilisation, stretching and exercise, and dry needling, chosen based on what you specifically need. Massage is part of the toolkit, not the whole story.
Your first session is a 60 minute assessment and treatment. Robyn will talk through what's going on, assess how your body is moving, and provide initial treatment. Follow-up sessions are an opportunity to build a realistic treatment plan with you and work through that plan using the techniques that suit your situation.
Nerve-related pain, including carpal tunnel and sciatica
Lower back, hip, shoulder and neck pain
Healthy ageing, including falls prevention and balance
Every body and every treatment plan is different, and while a lot of relief can come from just one or a few sessions, many issues don't have a quick fix. Change is possible, even after years of pain, and it's built through an honest, realistic plan rather than a promise of overnight results.
Dry needling uses fine needles to help release tight muscles and trigger points, the small, knotty areas that build up in overworked muscles. Researchers are still working out exactly why it helps, but it's thought to work by changing how pain signals travel between the area, the spinal cord and the brain, at least in the short term. In practice, that often means less pain and an easier path back to your normal movement.
It can sound alarming if you haven't come across it before, most people feel a light sensation or a small muscle twitch rather than pain. It's one tool in the toolkit, used only where it fits your plan, and it isn't the right choice for everyone. It may not suit you if you don't like needles, take blood thinners, or are pregnant, Robyn will always check what's appropriate for you before treatment.Â
